Candles are a great way to brighten up and decorate any space, and learning how take make them yourself can be a great way to save money; plus, by making your own candles, you can customize exactly what color and scent you want. Candle making is a fun activity, and you may soon find it becoming your newest hobby, or even a side business. Before you get started making candles, here are the supplies you will need: candle wax (preferably soy wax as it is less carcinogenic than other types of wax), wicks, whatever container you want to have you candle in (pint sized mason jars are a great option), a double boiler, a candy thermometer, wax dye, and whatever fragrance you want.
Your first step will be to prepare your container and wick; you will want to make sure that your wick is about an inch higher than the candle container. Next melt the wax in the double boiler; keep the candy thermometer in the wax as you are melting it, and gently stir the wax with a wooden spoon. Keep heating the wax until it reaches the proper temperature (for soy wax this should be about 150 degrees Fahrenheit); remove the wax from the heat. Then stir the dye into the wax until the color is evenly blended into the wax. Let the wax cool for a few minutes, and then stir in your preferred fragrance. After you have added the fragrance, you can then carefully pour the wax into your chosen container; allow the wax to set completely before moving or using your new candle.
